Matvey Shapiro
Matvey Shapiro investigates the concept of form adaptability in his work. He focuses on how and why, during the artistic process, elements naturally or intentionally align into self-contained structures. His practice is characterized by a technical, almost engineering approach, which remains consistent across different mediums and themes.
Shapiro's interest in straight lines and the ability of letters and symbols to visually adapt to one another within a text began during his exploration of early 20th-century avant-garde art. Referencing the visual language of the avant-garde, his graphic works integrate letters into tightly structured systems by compressing them. This "fusion" of graphic textual elements not only renders the text challenging to read but also transforms it into near-abstraction. He draws on quotes from avant-garde poets, Soviet films, and impersonal statements or questions, engaging with themes of national and historical experience.
